The Thirties proved to be a difficult time for the Modernist music scene in Europe after Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party took power in Germany and the Austrofascists took energy in Austria. As a result, most Modernist music which featured atonality, dissonance, and “disturbing rhythms” were deemed as degenerate music and banned. As a results of these new insurance policies, many prominent Modernist composers such as Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky have been forced to flee to the United States whereas others corresponding to Anton Webern had been compelled to compose their works in secret.
