Sunshine Coast Airport names Tony Edmondstone CEO

Sunshine Coast Airport has appointed Tony Edmondstone as its next chief executive officer, bringing more than six years of experience leading a portfolio of airports across Australia. Edmondstone will take the helm in 2027, succeeding Chris Mills who departs in November to lead Hamilton Island Enterprises.

Edmondstone joins from Airport Development Group, where he served as CEO. The company owns and operates Darwin International Airport, Alice Springs Airport, and Tennant Creek Airports, alongside hotels, electricity operations, and a significant property portfolio.

Background in infrastructure and aviation

Before his time at Airport Development Group, Edmondstone worked as global head of supply and CFO for Orica Mining Services. His career also includes leadership positions at Alcoa, Amcor, and News Limited.

In a statement, Edmondstone said he was excited to join the airport as it enters a key stage of expansion. “Sunshine Coast Airport is a fabulous community asset which plays a critical, and ever expanding, role in supporting one of Australia’s fastest growing regions,” he said.

The incoming CEO noted the airport has an experienced team and several transformational projects underway. “I am looking forward to working with the board, executive team and employees to build on the strong foundations already in place and help deliver the next phase of growth for the Airport and the Sunshine Coast,” Edmondstone added.

Board’s search for new leadership

Sunshine Coast Airport chair David Ryan said Edmondstone’s appointment followed a thorough national recruitment effort. “We are delighted to welcome Tony to Sunshine Coast Airport,” Ryan said. “Tony is a highly accomplished executive with significant experience leading complex organisations, delivering major infrastructure projects and driving strategic growth.”

The chair said the board sought a leader capable of guiding both the airport’s aviation growth and its commercial development opportunities. “Tony’s appointment reflects the Board’s focus on securing a leader with the experience to guide both the Airport’s ongoing aviation growth and the delivery of its significant commercial and precinct development opportunities.”

The transition comes as the airport continues to expand its role in the region. For travelers and businesses relying on the facility, the change in leadership signals continuity in development plans already underway, though the specifics of any new initiatives remain to be seen once Edmondstone takes over.

Outgoing CEO to lead Hamilton Island

Ryan acknowledged the contribution of outgoing CEO Chris Mills, who will depart in November 2026. “Chris leaves the Airport in a strong position, having led a period of substantial growth, strengthened the organisation’s culture and progressed a number of critical strategic projects,” Ryan said.

Mills will become CEO of Hamilton Island Enterprises. The chair thanked him for his leadership on behalf of the board and wished him success in the new role.
